Dr Helen Pham is a General, Laparoscopic and Hepato-Pancreaticobiliary (HPB) Surgeon at Westmead Hospital, Norwest Hospital and Westmead Private Hospital in Sydney. Achieving her medical degree through the University of Western Sydney in 2012, Helen went on to complete her Master of Surgery at the University of Sydney (2018), Master of Public Health (2020) and Master of Health Leadership and Management (2022). She gained her Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in General Surgery in 2020. This was followed by further specialist training as an AHPBA HPB Fellow at Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary, Canada (2021/22), and as an AANZHPBA HPB Fellow at The Alfred Health in Victoria (2023/24) and Westmead Hospital (2024/25).
Helen's practice includes the management of benign and complex UGI/HPB conditions including an interest in liver, pancreas and biliary oncology. Helen is closely involved in surgical quality improvement, leading and contributing to a number of ongoing projects at Westmead Hospital, including protocols to reduce surgical site and urinary tract infections, day-only laparoscopic cholecystectomy pathways, and initiatives to reduce unplanned surgical readmissions. She is involved in ACS NSQIP in Australia, and is committed to embedding evidence-based, enhanced-recovery care into HPB and general surgical practice. Her research interests include HPB surgery, pancreatic and hepatobiliary cancer outcomes, and surgical quality improvement, and she has published extensively on these topics in various high impact surgical journals.
Helen is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) and a member of a wide range of professional bodies, including General Surgery Australia (GSA), the International Laparoscopic Liver Society (ILLS), the Australian and New Zealand Hepatic, Pancreatic and Biliary Association (AANZHPBA), the International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (IHPBA), the American Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association (AHPBA), and the Association for Academic Surgeons (AAS).
